Auditions:

At the Key Biscayne Community Center

By appointment only, to make an appointment here

This large production requires a large cast including adults, teens and children.

All performers will be asked to sing and dance during the audition.

All auditioners should prepare 30 seconds to one minute up-tempo song befitting the style and period of the

show (early 1960s).  No a cappella singing.   Bring your instrumental track on CD.  Be prepared to dance in

clothing you can move in.  No open-toed shoes for the dance audition.  Dance shoes or tennis shoes only.

Rehearsals at Key Biscayne, Fl on weekends and some lead roles one day at week on the evening.

 

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

(EDNA TURNBLAD AND VELMA VON TUSSLE ARE ALREADY CAST)

Tracy Turnblad A pleasantly plump teenager with a big heart who has dreams of being a dancing star... as soon as she's out of

detention for her big hair. Tracy isn't afraid to be herself and stand up for what she believes in. She must be friendly, relentless, and

goodhearted with a vibrant, lovable personalty and love to sing and dance. Tracy is on stage for a LOT of the show so she must

have stamina and talent - she performs in 10+ numbers. Vocal part: Mezzo, Vocal range: G below middle C to E above C

Wilbur Turnblad Tracy's goofy father, who owns the Har-De-Hut joke shop and is still madly in love with his wife, Edna. He

encourages Tracy to follow her dreams. Performs in 2+ numbers. Vocal part: Baritone, Vocal Range: G below C to E above middle

C

Corny Collins the exciting, confident dancing and singing host of his own TV dance show (the American Bandstand at its

inception). Corny is in favor of Tracy and racial integration. Performs in 4+ numbers. Vocal part: Tenor, Vocal Range: D below

middle C to A above middle C

Penny Pingleton Tracy's slightly dorky, but lovable best friend who is often by her side (when not grounded for life by her mother,

Prudy). Falls head over heels for Seaweed. Performs in 4+ numbers. Vocal part: Belt, Vocal Range: middle C to G above C

Amber Von Tussle  Bratty, selfish resident princess of The Corny Collins Show. Her mother's daughter through and through, she is

willing to do anything to win de Miss Teenage Hairspray pageant. Council Member. Performs in 7+ numbers. Vocal part: Belt,

Vocal range: middle C to F above C17

Link Larkin Teenage hearthrob, aspiring young Elvis, and male lead dancer on The Corny Collins Show. Falls in love with Tracy.

Council Member. Performs in 7+ numbers. Vocal part: Baritone, Vocal range: E below middle C to G above middle C

Seaweed J. Stubbs Motormouth Maybelle's son and a talented dancer on The Corny Collins Show, but only allowed on "Negro

Day" Ends up in detention with Tracy. Falls in love with Penny. Performs in 4+ numbers. Vocal part: Tenor, Vocal Range: G below

middle C to B above middle C

Motormouth Maybelle the sassy Corny Collins "Negro Day" JF. Owner of a record store and mother to Seaweed and Little Inez.

Plus-sized, she helps Edna find pride in herself. Performs in 3+ numbers. Vocal Part: Alto, Vocal Range: A below middle C to E

above C

Little Inez Seaweed's little sister and just as talented a dancer. Tries to audition for The Corny Collins Show but is turned away

because she is black by Velma. Performs in 3+ numbers. Vocal Part: Belt, Vocal Range: middle C to E above C

The Dynamites Judine, Kamilah and Shayna. Talented vocal trio a la The Supremes.  Feautured in my numbers together and

usually in tight harmony. Vocal Part: Various, Vocal Range: G below middle C to A above C

Council Members Tammy, Brad, Fender, Brenda, Sketch, Shelley, IZ, Lou Ann - Strong dancers and singer on The Corny Collins

Show. Perform in 5+numbers.

Other Students:  Gilbert, Duane, Lorraine, Stooie, Thad - kids we find in detention, Motormouth Maybelle's record shop and

many more scenes and songs.

MALE AUTHORITY FIGURE-

Mr. Pinky, owner of Mr. Pinky's Hefty Hideaway who gives Tracy and Edna a makeover,

Principal of Patterson Park High School

Mr. Harriman F. Spritzer, the President of Ultra Clutch Hairspray.

FEMALE AUTHORITY FIGURE-

The Matron guarding The Big Dollhouse

The Gym Teacher,

Prudy Pingleton: Penny's overprotective and often close-minded mother.
